Note a new state rule this year for hunter safety, Any student under 10 years old must be accompanied by a parent.

Gun Raffle/Picnic/Turkey Shoot: September 16th

Cleanup Weekend: May 19th and 20th

Sight In Days: Nov. 3rd and 4th, Nov. 10th and 11th.

CLUB MEETINGS: Second Wednesday of each month 7pm

Also, please note that membership renewals are coming due and the gate combination will be changed after new cards are sent out. Please make an effort not to shoot up the target hangers, especially the upright posts.

I've been told that,

The Logger's are finished!!! As of Oct. 12, the range is open again.

That said, we need to remind everyone to attach their targets to the furring strips, NOT to the upright poles. We still have an issue with the uprights getting shot up.

Also an official notification:

At the last meeting a motion was made and passed, to close the range, (completely) for the first week of rifle deer season. This closure will be strictly enforced. This action is taken as a courtesy to our neighbors, since many of them are hunting deer on adjacent properties during that week.

Happy Shooting folks. Keep it safe! And don't forget our "sight-in days" Nov. 5th and 6th, and Nov. 12th and 13th. $3 per gun with targets and sighting help provided. (The range will be closed to all other shooters on these days)

UPDATE:
There will be workers at the club by 10AM on Sunday. If you want to shoot that early, and there are enough shooters, we'll start the shooting evenets shortly after 10am rather than Noon.
Bring your guns, ammo, passing dish, and raffle tickets,,, we expect to have a good time!

Raffle Drawing Sunday the 18th

Sunday Sept. 18th, is our annual gun raffle drawing, picnic, and turkey shoot.
Hope you can make it out, all ticket holders, members and their families are welcomed.
The events will start at 12 noon, and working members and volunteers should be there by 11am, (10 am would be great) at the lastest.
We'll be shooting .22 rifles, shotguns, and new this year .22 pistols.
There will be lots of door prizes, a blind auction, a sporting goods rummage sale, free lunch, (water provided, pop, 75 cents out of the machine), a prize to the winner of each shooting round, and prizes for top shotgun, top pistol, and top rifle shooter.
Don't forget a passing dish for the lunch. The club will provide hotdogs, Brats's,Condiments, Chips, plates and plasticware.

Ticket sales have gone quite well over the last couple of weeks, and it appears, that there will only be a few tickets available at the event. Get there early and ask, you may be able to pick up your ticket, the morning of the event. The drawing will be held around 3pm, Good Luck!

Logging still going on

At tonights meeting, 8-10-11, we learned that the loggers are over half done, and that they should be finished in a little over 2 weeks. Until then, shooting is still restricted when the loggers are working.

It was also announced (at the meeting) that there will be two extra raffles at the annual Picnic.

Along with the featured Gun Raffle, will be two membership raffles. To enter these raffles, a member must attend a meeting, or work event. One ticket will be issued to each member for each meeting attended, and one ticket will be issued for each work session attended. These will be drawn at the picnic for two separate prizes. One for meeting attendance, one for working.

Save the Great Lakes from Asian Carp

How about keeping the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes!

As with the Huron-Manistee issue, we need to speak up, loud and often!

Senator Debbie Stabenow states that she has been leading the fight in congress to stop the spread of Asian Carp in the Great Lakes. This is about closing the waterway from the Mississipi River Basins to the Great Lakes. Likely, the only way to stop the Asian carp from decimating our Great Lakes.
The Army Corp of Engineers is holding public meetings about it on Jan. 7th, (past) in Traverse City, and in Ann Arbor in March. You can learn more at http://glmris.anl.gov and they will be accepting online comments until March 31, 2011. We all need to speak up on this issue and save the Great Lakes!

Huron-Manistee National Forest hunting ban

The USDA Forest Service is taking comments on whether or not they should kowtow to environmentalist and anti-hunting groups, to ban hunting in the Huron-Mansitee National Forest in Northern Michigan

This has been hunting land since way before the Forest Service existed. You can send your comments to :

Annual Raffle/Picnic Turkey Shoot

The Raffle Drawing/Picnic/Turkey Shoot is coming up soon, on Sunday Sept. 12th.
All members, ticket holders, and families are invited.
The gates should be open by 9 am. The Raffle drawing is at 3 pm.
.22 shoots and shotgun shoots will start as soon as enough shooters show up.
The picnic is usually a little after 12 noon. Hot Dogs and Brat's will be provided, if possible please bring a passing dish.

There usually a special offer on club memberships too, so if you've been thinking of joining, now is the time! Raffle tickets will be available for purchase, right up until the drawing.

Come on out for a day of good food, good shooting, door prizes, and if you're lucky win a new gun.

Fix up, Clean up Weekend

This Saturday and Sunday, May 15th and 16th, is the club's Fixup, Cleanup weekend. There are all kinds of chores to be taken care of. If you can, bring a shovel, rake, hammer, chainsaw, a pair of gloves, or anything else that you think you might be able to use to clean up or fix up something at the club grounds or the club house. Hope to see you there, and here's hoping for nice weather. Here are a few (not all) items from our list.

Clean out the gutters on the back of the clubhouse.
A retaining wall needs to be built at the west end of the clubhouse.
The Archery range still needs lots of work.
Clean up brass and other items in front (range side) of the pavilion.
Clean up and dispose of scrap targets.
Install a flexable heating duct in the bathroom.
Paint unprotected (untreated) surfaces on the Pavilion
Continue expanding the wiring (lights, etc) in the pavilion.

Membership renewal forms are in the mail. We've included the latest newsletter, and a few other tidbits. (including the information on this page) If you forgot to renew last year, consider it a reminder, we'd like to have you back. If your anxiously awaiting your renewal form, good news, it will be there soon.

Membership fee's remain the same at $30. (member's spouse is included). Some of you signed up late enough in 2009 to get the New Years special. (the end of 2009 and 2010). If you're one of them, you should be recieving your 2010 card soon.

Remember, the gate combination changes after the Febuary meeting.
And Remember that this is an Election Year for the club! Elections at the Febuary meeting.

We're looking forward to a great 2010, if you haven't been out to the club lately, we love to see you. The tentative 2010 scheduale is as follows:

We Need Help!

Note to the membership of Eastern Arenac Sportsmens Club:

We have found ourselves without a club Treasurer. We need someone to step up and fill the position at least until the the election in March. And of course, we will need someone to run for the position in the March Election. We will also be needing someone to run for the position of President.

I repeat, we need someone to step up right now to take over the position of Treasurer.

These positions are very important to the continuation of the club. There are things that must be done for the club to continue to exist, and someone needs to do them.

Keep the upcoming club election in mind and consider offering your services. Don is willing to work with the incoming President, so it won't be "cold turkey". Our next meeting is Oct. 14th, and we'd really like to appoint an interrum Treasurer

We had good sun most of the day, with a fair breeze to make things a little more interesting. The drawing itself, in shades of last year, was sprinkled on by a quick moving rain cloud, but it only rained a few minutes, long enough to get us to move everything under the tent and pavilion.

Annual Gun Raffle

We are currently in the process of picking out the guns for the Annual Gun Raffle. As soon as I get a solid list, I'll post it here. We're looking at basically the same plan as last year, 10 or 11 guns, and 700 tickets being sold. (very good odds). The drawing date this year is Sept 13th.

There are plenty of other national Pro-Gun organizations, like MCRGO if you don't care for the NRA, but the bottom line is,, with today's anti-gun government it's imperative that Pro-Gun organizations have even higher membership levels than ever before. We haven't lost the fight for the Second Ammendment!

A bit more time

The meeting on the 10th was canceled due to the weather, and a couple of other unforseen circumstances. Hope everyone planning to attend, got the notification, (it was kind of a late call).
This gives us another month to think about what we're going to due about the MUCC affiliation. (Actually, we can probably take longer than that).

Letter from MUCC

Attention Club Members:

We have recieved a letter from Michigan United Conservation Club stating the following:

MUCC membership cost will be decreased to $5 a year, including the online edition of the magazine. (The paper magazine will cost an extra $20 a year)

All affiliated clubs will be required to be 100% members.

Action required on our part:

We need to decide how to address this issue. Do we add $5 a year to our membership fee, and remain affiliated with MUCC? (something of this nature would be required to continue our yearly gun raffle, because I doubt that the club could afford to cover the costs). Or do we give up our affiliation, and our gun raffle?

This issue will be addressed at the next club meeting on Dec. 10th, 2008, 7Pm. If you can't attend and would like to input your opinion, send email to augrester@gmail.com or fergie@avci.net .

Sight In Day's Nov. 1-2nd are over. The weather treated up fairly, though maybe a bit chilly. The turnout was a bit slow, possible due to there being another chance next weekend, or possibly just because ammo is so costly these days, (we all seem to be cutting back a bit).

It poured down rain during most of the Turkey Shoot, and the Picnic had to be held inside, but we still had a pretty nice turnout, and I think everyone had a pretty good time. We want to thank everyone who attended and even more, everyone who showed us their support by purchasing and selling tickets. I didn't get the final count of tickets sold, but at my last inquiry it was around 760. (The unsold tickets were not used in the drawing)
In case you couldn't make it, Don religiously turned the handle on the raffle drum, throughout most of the Turkey Shoot, and right after the Shoot, a young gentleman from the crowd was selected to draw the tickets, one at a time, with Don rotating the drum some more in between each draw.
The winners can pick up their prizes at the Saganing Sagamok Store on Worth Rd and U.S. 23 anytime during business hours. Be sure to bring your winning ticket.
Thanks again, and hopefully we'll all get to do this again next year, (hopefully with better weather!)

Hello EASC Members,
This is just a short note for all of you members that have ignoredour recent notices that we have raffle tickets to sell and or buy. I still possess about 60 tickets that have nowhere to go. I suspect that I will still get a handful of unsold tickets back because guys that have already sold what they could, are running out of people that they know. It is now up to the rest of you guys to step forward and give usa helping hand with the rest of these tickets. These tickets are $10 each with a maximum of 800 being sold. The raffle takes place on the 14th of this month. It is also our annual membership picnic whereas we ask you to bring a dish to pass. We will be shooting .22 cal. rifles and shotguns of your choice. They also offer free comprehensive reloading tables at their web sites. Hodgdon Powder , IMR , and Winchester.

This is a 17in. Walleye from the AuGres River. Note the leech like bloodsucker on the back side of his fin. (pointed to by the needlenose pliers)

These are showing up on lot's of fish and also inside the cooler. The color is light grey.

Are these hitchhickers Leechs?? Someone told me they could be baby Lamphrey?? This Walleye had one on each fin, same location, plus, one noticable white worm in his fillets.

Here are a couple pictures from today's ClayWhacker event. First the firing line, second our two youngest winners.

The attendance was less that expected, (a few teams were no-shows), but I believe everyone had a great time. As previously noted, all profits will be turned over to Camp Fishtales. Hopefully the word will get out and attendance will improve at ClayWhacker II.

NOTE: This coming Wednesday, July 2'd, is the club membership clay shoot, at 5:30 pm. $5 to shoot as long as you like, (or have ammo),, and it has been said, that if enough people show up, we will recreate the ClayWhacker course.

1ST Annual ClayWhacker Challenge

We'll look forward to seeing you at this Sunday's 1st Annual ClayWhacker Community Challenge.
That's this Sunday, June 29th, at the Clubgrounds.
If you're a member and not shooting, we could still use your help running the event, so come on out if you can.
I've been out of the loop for a week, but the last I heard, we had at least 4 challenging (5 shooters to a team) teams. Hot Dogs and Pop will be available for purchase , and fun will be had by all. (The club does not sell or provide ammo)
The Range will open at 10am for practice, (member's working should try to arrive by 9am) and the competition will start at 2pm. Fee's will be 15 dollars per team entry, and 3 dollars per practice round.

Our Club member shotgun shoot attendance seems to be down this year. The next member shoot is May 21st. I'll be out of town, but we'd sure like to see a few more members make it out there to bust some clays.

This coming weekend is the CleanUp/FixUp week end, May 17th and 18th. The club can use a good cleanup and a few repairs before the season get's into full roll, so try to make it out there if you can. June 29th is the date of our community oriented "ClayWhacker Shoot". So far Tim has lined up 4 Teams to shoot against us. Two from Rivers Edge in Augres, one from the Augres and Arenac Police units, and one from AuGres Marine. More teams are welcome. Just contact Don, Gary, or Tim if you'd like to enter another team.The shoot will be styled similar to a sporting clays shoot. Four persons per Team, $10 Team entry fee. The actual shoot will consist of 5 stations, two birds per station. The profits from the event are to be donated to "Camp FishTales". <- (click the link for more info about C.F.T.)

P.S. We still need club members to form a team or two to represent the club, (this would be a good opportunity for those second shifters to get out on the weekend and shoot)

Membership Skeet Shoots
The first membership skeet shoot this year is scheduled for April 23 at 5:30 pm.
Cost to cover clay pigeons is $5 per shooter. The shoots will continue every two weeks unless otherwise notified.
